The only culture she was exposed to was the Parsee culture. The aspect of her Afghan culture has been shaped by myths and stories instead of real experience. However, her father did not let Shah forget about her Afghan culture. In order to prevent that, he made “pilau”, an Afghan delicacy, for many meals. That didn’t stop Shah from wondering about her Afghan culture. When she turned thirty-six, she set out for an adventure of her lifetime. This journey allowed her to discover herself and her lost culture. She went to Afghan and filmed “Beneath the Veil”, a documentary. She hid under a burqa, a crucial element of the Afghan culture. All women of this society must wear it. This veil makes women invisible. This burqa covers almost all parts of the body if not all. She has entered a whole new world that is completely unknown. Shah realizes that in this world “[she] is forbidden to show her face, paint [her] nails, or fly a kite” (Shah 12). It goes against everything she was raised and has known. Everything she wants to do or is used to doing is banned or could be “prohibited by the Islamic Law” (Shah 12). This culture comes to her as a shock. There isn’t exactly any freedom if there is any at all. She discover that “nothing can be permitted unless the Holy Qur’an” allows it (Shah 12). People in this country cannot even listen to simple music that brings a smile to their face. Now a days technology is so great. It allows everyone to watch T.V., listen to the radio, and chat online. Unfortunately the Afghanis are only allowed to listen to cassette tapes that “contain Qur’anic recitations…and simple religious chants” (Shah 12). The oppression of women is so high it’s unbelievable. They are deprived of the rights that all humans should be allowed to. They are not able to simply walk outside unless they are accompanied by a “male relative escort” (Shah 13). When she was younger she was eager to discover her lost land. Now fear lives inside Shah; there is not one moment when she can let her guard down. She is angry with all this new information. The Taliban has “corrupted all the qualities she grew up on” all the myths and stories that were so delightful are no longer there (Shah 17). Everything she grew up knowing has changed. A myth that she has hoped to live her whole life was the story that her father told her when she was a little girl. Her father would tell her stories about a magical garden. This place has a “fairytale landscape you enter in your dreams” (Shah 1). When she visited Paghman to see this magical garden it was no longer there. Unfortunately due to the corruption the Taliban has caused, that hope has been crushed. When she discovered this atrocity, she felt “apart of her did not exist…and [she] was being extinguished” (Shah 223-224).

In this passage, Shah’s writing is very detailed. Her word choice is very accurate and concise. She uses a diary entry to explain to her audience exactly what she is going through. Her detailed description of what is going on around her is extremely useful. Her voice in this passage is very strong. The reader can almost feel as if they are sitting right next to her in the caravan. In this passage, she uses a series of compound sentences. This allows her to elaborate more instead of having many short sentences. I believe her use of compound sentences makes the reader keep going. Instead of reading and stopping at every thought, the reader goes on. When she talks about the burqa it is not always defined but it is italicized so the reader knows that they have gone over the word previously. Her sentences are very straight forward. There are not sudden words that are unknown to the reader. If in any cases there are, she explains to the reader exactly what it is.

The audiences that she is trying to reach out to are people just like her. The little girls that have grown up believing in myths and wishing they could experience them. She is reaching out to them. I believe that her writing has greatly proved her purpose. She includes so much detail of what she has experienced of the culture and religion. Although the myths were not as they seemed, Shah has successfully discovered herself and her new world.

WORKS CITED

Shah Saira.
